AmCham, formally registered in December 1973, is a
member-funded independent organization.History:
The American Business Council
was established in Singapore in 1973 to represent the growing
number of American companies operating here. In 1993, the
American Business officially became the American Chamber of
Commerce in Singapore. The Chamber was proud to celebrate its 30th
anniversary in 2003.
Mission:
To promote the interests of
AmCham members in Singapore and the region by providing advocacy,
business information and networking opportunities.
Members:
Over 2,700 members from more than 520 U.S. and foreign-owned companies. More than 77% of members are senior
executives, holding the position of vice-president or above in their
respective organizations. Most U.S. Fortune 500 companies located in
Singapore are members and almost 150 member companies are small
and medium enterprises (SMEs).
AmCham
represents an estimated US$25 billion of investments in Singapore and
the region.
U.S. Investments in Singapore:
There are over 3,000 U.S. companies operating in Singapore and
Singapore is an excellent market for a wide variety of U.S. products
and services. The U.S.-Singapore Free Trade Agreement that came into
effect in 2004 expanded U.S. market access access in goods,
services, investment and government procurement.
Singapore is the 15th largest trading partner
of the United States and became the ninth largest export market in
the world. Two-way trade increased 19% to US $42.5 billion while
exports grew by nearly 20% to US $24.7 billion.
