HIV/AIDS is a major global issue that is rapidly expanding in Asia Pacific. As it spreads it has a direct impact on business due to increased costs, loss of productivity, and the overall threat to the economies in which business operates. HIV/AIDS is a bottom-line issue that impacts a company's economic, social and human resource interests and it should therefore be managed like any other business issue in the workplace.
The key to fighting this disease is education and dealing with it in the open openly and with compassion. Greater knowledge helps an individual to make choices that will prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS. AmCham wants to encourage your company to step-up to this challenge by putting in place in Singapore: An HIV/AIDS employee education program that is supported by Why should we, as business leaders in Asia, focus our time and resources on HIV/AIDS?
AmCham's efforts are in line with the initiatives of the World Economic Forum and the U.S. Government's efforts to combat HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases. The U.S. Government has designated HIV/AIDS as such a serious threat that it now engages in HIV/AIDS diplomacy. Dr Julie Gerberding of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, depicted globalization as having four cornerstones: economic, security, humanitarian and health. HIV/AIDS is a threat to all of these. We can all contribute to the reduction of HIV transmission through education...in the work place! This initiative has the full support of Ambassador Lavin and the U. S. Embassy in Singapore.
