Nike Thailand Liaison Office HIV/AIDS
Programs and Policies
Our Nike Thailand Liaison Office recognizes that Human Immunodeficiency Virus
(HIV) or Acquired Immune
Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a serious health problem worldwide. At the end of
1999 over 33 million people were
infected with HIV and 16.3 million people have already lost their lives.
Progress in fighting the disease has been
made but the virus continues to spread infecting 16,000 new infections a day. We
have been very fortunate in our
Nike Thailand Liaison Office in that apparently no National or Expat staff have
had to deal with this dreaded virus.
We want to keep it that way. Moving forward, we are going to create a HIV/AIDS
program in our office that will
educate our staff on the prevention and characteristics of HIV/AIDS.
Our Nike Thailand Liaison Office also recognizes that even with the best
education and prevention program some
people still could get the HIV/AIDS virus. Because of this possibility we are
also going to create a policy in our
office on how we will deal with any employees that acquires the HIV/AIDS virus.
Below is our Nike Thailand Liaison Office HIV/AIDS policy that will be
implemented in Thai and English in our
National Staff “Rules of Employment”.
1. The Nike Thailand Liaison Office will begin providing annual HIV/AIDS
programs that will be available to all
staff members. The initial program will be presented by the Thailand Business
Coalition on AIDS. The
programs will be scheduled to maximize the amount of attendees. Department
Directors, Team Leaders and our
Corporate Responsibility Department will strongly encourage our staff to attend
these programs.
2. HIV/AIDS information and consultation will be available for employees. This
will include videos, books,
brochures and updated articles in the Footwear and Apparel resource libraries.
Our Nike Thailand Liaison
Office Corporate Responsibility Department along with Khun Rungroj will be
responsible for making sure
this information is available and kept up to date.
3. The Nike Thailand Liaison Office Corporate Responsibility Department will be
responsible for making sure
all new employees go through a short HIV/AIDS orientation program.
4. The Nike Thailand Liaison Office will not include HIV/AIDS testing as a
pre-employment requirement but
will provide voluntary confidential testing during the Office annual physical
examination.
5. The Nike Thailand Liaison Office treats all employees, whether infected with
HIV/AIDS or not, in an equal
and non-discriminatory manner. This includes job application, promotions,
discharge, training or other
condition and privileges of employment.
6. The Nike Thailand Liaison Office allows employees infected with HIV/AIDS to
continue working provided
he/she complies with the Nike Thailand Liaison Office accepted work performance
standards.
7. The Nike Thailand Liaison Office allows employees infected with HIV/AIDS to
continue working if medical
authorities indicate that his/her condition and presence at work does not affect
his/her work performance and
health as well as the health of his/her colleagues?
8. The Nike Thailand Liaison Office has a flexible and reasonable attitude to
employment condition, unless it
may impose an undue hardship on the business. In the case that the employee is,
per the doctor’s orders,
unable to work, the Nike Thailand Liaison Office may consider terminating the
employment in accordance
with the Nike Thailand Liaison Office “Rules of Employment” and regulations as
per the Thai Labor Laws.
The Nike Thailand Liaison Office keeps all medical information, medical records
or related information in
absolute confidence. An employee infected with HIV/AIDS is not required to
inform the Nike Thailand
Liaison Office, except at his/her own discretion. We will assist and support
employees with HIV like any
other employee with a life threatening illness.
9. The Nike Thailand Liaison Office Director of Administration will be
responsible for making sure all of our
staff have a copy of this policy and understand this policy.
In summary, our Nike Thailand Liaison Office is creating a HIV/AIDS policy. Our
policy has two main
objectives. One, to educate our staff on the characteristics and prevention of
the HIV/AIDS virus. The second
objective is to state how our Nike Thailand Liaison Office will deal with any of
our employees that acquire the
HIV/AIDS virus. No events caused us to create this policy. It is just the right
thing to do as we will follow
several reputable Bangkok companies (Jardines, The Regent Hotel, The Royal
Orchid Sheraton, The Shell
Company of Thailand) whom have established similar policies. If you have any
questions please contact your
Department Director. |
