Synopsis

The recent Tax Cuts and Jobs Act hit many US exposed business owners on two fronts:

 i) You must pay a 15.5% tax on part of your foreign retained earnings. This tax can be spread over 8 years.

ii) Going forward, expats will also have to pay tax on profits in a foreign corporation. We must now pay US tax on our profits in excess of the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion.

These changes apply to any business where an American citizen or green card holder owns at least 10% of the business.  On top of this, US tax breaks for “pass-through entities,” such as domestic LLCs and S-Corporations are not available to expats.

Join us for an update as we demystify these new US tax rules and remind you of the older ones.
