Please join us for the TPP Task Force briefing on January 22 with speakers Deborah Elms, Founder and Executive Director, Asian Trade Centre and Steve Okun, Founder and CEO, APAC Advisors. Deborah and Steve will reconvene to discuss the next steps for AmCham Singapore given the recent developments on TPP-11, or CPTTP.

About the Speakers:

Deborah Elms
Founder and Executive Director
Asian Trade Centre

Deborah Elms is Founder and Executive Director of the Asian Trade Centre.  The Asian Trade Centre works with governments and companies to design better trade policies for the region.  Dr. Elms sits on the International Technical Advisory Committee of the Global Trade Professionals Alliance and is Chair of the Working Group on Trade Policy and Law.  She is also a senior fellow in the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Trade Academy. Previously, Dr Elms was head of the Temasek Foundation Centre for Trade & Negotiations (TFCTN) and Senior Fellow of International Political Economy at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Her projects include the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and global value chains. She has provided consulting on a range of trade issues to governments including the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Taiwan, and Singapore. Dr. Elms received a PhD in political science from the University of Washington, a MA in international relations from the University of Southern California, and bachelor’s degrees from Boston University. Dr Elms publishes the Talking Trade Blog.

Steve Okun
Founder & CEO

The Founder and CEO of APAC Advisors, Steven Okun is a leader on corporate public affairs, sustainability, and stakeholder engagement in Asia Pacific.

APAC Advisors is a government relations, policy, and sustainability consultancy which empowers clients, ranging from global corporations to social enterprises and NGOs, to operate at the intersection of business, government, and media. APAC Advisors has a strategic partnership to expand and deepen the Asia Pacific regional presence of international strategic advisory firm McLarty Associates. In addition, the firm serves as the ASEAN Representative for EMPEA, the global industry association for private capital in emerging markets.

As KKR’s first Director of Asia Public Affairs from 2011-2017, his responsibilities encompassed government affairs, communications, stakeholder engagement and sustainability, and supporting such efforts for its portfolio companies.

Steve led UPS Asia’s public affairs practice from 2003 until 2010.

Steve was elected three times each as Chairman of AmCham Singapore and the Asia Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce (APCAC).

Steve served in the Administration of President Bill Clinton as Deputy General Counsel at the US Department of Transportation. For his public service, Steve was awarded the Secretary’s Award for Special Service Commendation.

Often representing and advocating the views of the US business community, Steve is a periodic guest host on CNBC and frequently appears on Channel News Asia.

He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.
