Health systems around the world are under intense cost pressure and payors are looking for ways to manage their populations in an efficient manner without compromising on quality. Healthcare cost inflation and diminishing capital in the health systems imply these pressures will only worsen.
Health insurance companies have a vested interest in keeping their members healthy and assuring that their health care requirements are met in a cost effective manner. These same “Population Health Management” principles are being applied in the broader context at the National level, particularly as health care budgets come under increasing pressure. But Population Health Management can be seen as an academic concept - this presentation will describe the fundamental building blocks of a Population Health Management program, and provides practical examples of how this is implemented in practice.About the Speaker

Steven Blahy is a health insurance and services professional with over 20 years of international experience. He has led organizations, advised governments and corporates through transformations, developing strategy, delivering operational improvements, and leveraging technology to reduce healthcare costs improve health outcomes.
Steven has been with Aetna for 12 years where he is currently Executive Director of Aetna’s Population Health Management services with a focus in the South East Asia. He is CEO of Aetna Korea where he working with partner companies to leverage technology and analytics to gain deeper insights into members in order to develop competitive products, improve operational efficiencies and overall insurance portfolio performance.
Steven was Managing Director of Aetna Qatar, which provides health insurance, population health management and the associated services to the State of Qatar. In this role he has executive leadership responsibilities for the business and operational functions including claims management, provider management, customer services, fraud and audit, disease and care management programs, data and analytics services as well as managing the overall P&L for the business.
Prior to these roles, Steven has held numerous positions of increasing responsibility with Aetna, including Head of Aetna International’s Medical Products portfolio where he was responsible for Aetna’s health care product portfolio of $US1.5B. As Head of Strategic Initiatives he drove the development of Aetna’s International strategy and continuous operational improvements. Steven also served in Aetna’s Innovation, Technology and Service Operations where he led the strategic planning, vendor management, metrics and process improvement organizations.
Prior to Aetna, Steve was a management consultant with Diamond Management Consultants (now PwC Advisory) for 8 years in London and New York, focusing on business strategy, and operational improvements in the health insurance and finance industries. Steven also held product management and business development roles at Bloomberg L.P.
Steven graduated from the University of Queensland, Australia with a Bachelor of Economics.
