Minister Lawrence Wong was elected a Member of Parliament in May 2011 and subsequently held positions in the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Communications and Information, and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. As Culture Minister, Minister Wong led the bid for the Singapore Botanic Gardens to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After the 2015 General Election, Minister Wong was appointed the Minister for National Development and the Second Minister for Finance. He is also the Co-Chairman of the Singapore-Tianjin Economic and Trade Council.
Beginning his career as a civil servant, Minister Wong earlier served as the Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority, the Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and the Director of Healthcare Finance at the Ministry of Health.
Minister Wong obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor respectively. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School.
