Minister for Communications and Information, Minister in charge of Cyber Security, and Minister in charge of Muslim Affairs
Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim was appointed Minister for Communications & Information in 2011. He is also the Minister in charge of Cyber Security and the Minister in charge of Muslim Affairs. He has been a Member of the Singapore Parliament (MP) since 1997.
Dr. Yaacob’s previous government positions include service as Minister for the Environment and Water Resources (2006 to 2011), Minister for the Environment (2004 to 2006), Minister for Community Development and Sports (2003-2004), Minister of State for Community Development and Sports (2001 to 2002) and Senior Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (2001).
Earlier in his career, Dr. Yaacob was a structural engineer at Bylander Meinhardt Partnership before receiving a scholarship to pursue a PhD at Stanford University. He then worked as a post-doctoral fellow at Cornell University prior to joining the National University of Singapore. He is currently on leave of absence from the university as an associate professor.
Dr. Yaacob is active in community service and has been involved in the Association of Muslim Professionals, Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura and Jamiyah, to name a few. He also served as a board member of the Civil Service College, the National Heritage Board, STV12 Pte Ltd, and Temasek Polytechnic, and as a trustee of NTUC Income.
Dr Yaacob is married and has two children, a son and a daughter. He enjoys reading, listening to music, and meeting people.
