Minister Ong Ye Kung was elected as a Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC in September 2015, and appointed to the Cabinet of Singapore as the Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) on October 1, 2015. He holds the concurrent appointment of Senior Minister of State for Defense.
Prior to his Cabinet appointment, he held the position of Director of Group Strategy at Keppel Corporation. Before joining Keppel Corporation, Minister Ong was the Deputy Secretary-General of National Trades Union Congress. Previous government positions included service as Chief Executive of the Workforce Development Agency (WDA), Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong from 2003-2005, and Press Secretary to former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew from 1997-2003. Minister Ong was also the Deputy Chief Negotiator for the U.S.-Singapore Free Trade Agreement.
Minister Ong graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science (U.K.) with a Bsc (Econs) First Class Honors, and holds a Master of Business Administration from the Institute of Management Development, Lausanne, Switzerland. He is married with two teenage children.
