Stock markets worldwide have been hammered since the start of the year; plunging oil – now below US$30 a barrel – and commodity prices are now raising concerns of energy and resources sector bankruptcies. China, which once backstopped the global economy, is changing gears, while exuberance for Abe’s policies is waning. Heightened risk aversion is fuelling the demand for safe haven assets, with gold officially in bull territory while expectations of an end to the bond bull market remain just that. A rising domestic currency could spell trouble in such a challenging environment and central banks in several developed economies are embracing negative interest rates – which was once deemed a theoretical curiosity – in an effort to stem the appreciation. How will capital flows into commercial real estate react to this risk-on mode? Sigrid Zialcita, Managing Director at Cushman & Wakefield Research, Asia Pacific will provide a critical analysis of the current environment and its impact on commercial real estate investment in Asia Pacific.
