Mission: The Committee
assists members with
identifying and responding to economic and commercial matters taking
place in Singapore,
the region, and in the U.S.
Members maintain contact with Singapore
and U.S. Governments on matters of mutual concern and conduct programs
based on
member interests, including region-wide and country-specific
information
programs. It also serves as the focal point for developing AmCham
positions on
regional issues.
Industry Brief: Government
affairs and advocacy is a fundamental consideration for any size
business
operating in Singapore
and the region. The
United States,
Singapore
and their common partners in Southeast
Asia
are inextricably linked by historical ties and common security
interests as
well as by cross-border movement of people, data, goods, services, and
capital. With
multi-tiered commitments
in both the public and private sectors, industry leaders maintain
regular
contact with U.S.,
Singaporean, and other regional government representatives through
organizations such as AmCham to harmonize a prosperous, competitive,
and fair
business environment.
Senior
executives with such regional commitments have successfully leveraged
their
business interests in consultations with U.S.
Congressmen and staff advisors in Washington
along with missions throughout Southeast
Asia. A
prime example is the U.S.-Singapore Free
Trade Agreement, which is considered to be a foundational pillar of
cooperation
among businesses and the governments of both nations.
In September 2008, the United States
announced its intention to begin negotiations to join the Trans-Pacific
Strategic Economic Partnership agreement.
This high-standard Free Trade Agreement among Singapore,
Chile,
New
Zealand,
and Brunei Darussalam, would serve as a vehicle for Trans-Pacific
economic integration.
Shortly after the U.S.
decision to join the negotiations, Australia,
Peru,
and Vietnam
also
indicated their interest in participating.
Meetings:
The Committee holds a meeting
and invites a speaker to discuss issues of concern to members on a
