The AmCham-SMU Scholarship

In 2004, AmCham undertook a fund-raising drive to support an annual scholarship at Singapore Management University.

By year end, AmCham reached its fundraising target of $400 000 to endow the AmCham-SMU Scholarship Fund.

It was thanks to the generosity of our members that we were able to reach this target in one year.

The $400 000 was contributed by over 60 different member corporations and individuals, and through the proceeds of a silent auction held at the Ambassador's Gala Dinner in September 2004.

As well as reaching our target, the Fund received three for one matching funds from the Singapore Government, bringing the total of the endowment fund to $1.6 million.

The AmCham-SMU Scholarship is an initiative the Chamber is extremely proud of and one that will help educate the future business leaders of Singapore.

Sponsors

The Chamber thanks all generous sponsors of the Scholarship Fund and would like to particularly thank the Fund's patron sponsors - American Home Assurance, Motorola Pte Ltd, Pacific Architects and Engineers, Neptune Orient Lines and Harrah's Entertainment.

Background

The Scholarship is open to local students interested in studying full-time for a Bachelor of Business Management degree at the Singapore Management university. One scholarship is awarded annually, valued at $SGD6 000 per year, and is tenable for the duration of the scholar's studies, up to four years, subject to good academic performance.

It is awarded to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence, high co-curricular achievements, excellent leadership qualities and character and a demonstrated interest in business.

The Singapore Management University Student Internship Program

The SMU Internship Program allows organizations to access interns for full-time.

All interns are undergraduates of one of SMU's four schools - the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, the School of Accountancy, the School of Economics and Social Sciences and the School of Information Systems.

SMU Undergraduates are typically 20-25 years old, and are fluent in English with many being bilingual or trilingual. Approximately 13% of the student population is international, with the majority from India, China and the surrounding South-East Asian countries.

Employer Benefits

- Students can provide affordable short term help for project work or peak activity. Using interns can be a cost-effective solution which does not create additional headcount.
- Organizations have access to prospective entry-level employees and are given the opportunity to assess candidates for possible employment after graduation.
- Provides an excellent means for employers to enhance their image and recruitment activities.
- Enables your organization to develop a solid relationship with SMU and pave the way for joint projects of mutual interest.

Duration of Internships

Usually a minimum 10 week duration between April and August although longer time periods can be accommodated. The internship period for 2006 is 24 April to 6 August.

Allowance & Working Hours

Allowance is flexible but the recommended monthly allowance is S$600-S$700 subject to a company's discretion. Interns follow the normal office working hours of the employing organization.

Work Permit Exemption

Full-time international students of SMU need not apply for work permits for internships.

CPF Exemption

Employers accepting full-time matriculated or registered students of SMU as interns are exempted from CPF contributions.
